When Inter visit the Juventus Stadium on Saturday in the Derby d’Italia, the battle to win Serie A could take yet another twist. The Turin-based hosts have won the last six Scudettos but are in real danger of falling short this time around; at the very least the club will have genuine challengers in the form of both Napoli and Inter. The former were the pacesetters until last weekend when Juventus beat them with a goal from their former striker Gonzalo Higuain; that result leaves the latter as the only unbeaten team and they have a one-point lead.
The drop off in competitiveness from Internazionale since Jose Mourinho left in 2010 has been alarming. The Portuguese left in 2010 with the club freshly Champions League and Serie A champions, and the dominant Italian side. But since then, they have had just one second-place finish and one fourth place finish.
With Luciano Spalletti now in charge, the Milan club now look like they could be heading into an era of success once more, particularly as they have spent big on transfer fees in the last two summer transfer windows. Even a top-four finish, and a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2012, would be considered a triumph, and Inter are well on the way to that.
Juve, however, will know that a win would see them overtake Inter and, depending on how Napoli get on against Fiorentina, see them go top. In the Old Lady’s favour is their sheer attacking quality – they have the best record in the division and have scored 41 times in just 15 matches. In all competitions they have won their past three and this week they advanced to the last-16 of the Champions League. Beating Inter would be a major achievement and they would be the first team to do so since May.
Tipbet have odds that expect them to do just that: the champions are offered at 1.70 to turn up when it matters – this is part of their 60+ offering of markets. A draw is considered pretty likely at 3.90, while Inter are 5.00 to come away from Turin with maximum points. Such a result would confirm the club as serious title contenders.
