Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid – the Spaniards look to keep their qualification hopes alive in Group C

Before this season’s Champions League campaign began properly in September, many would have expected this final match of the group stage between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid to be a play-off to determine which finishes top of Group C, with both comfortably into the last-16 already.

However, with Roma surprisingly competitive, it is no longer in the hands of the Spaniards and they are increasingly looking like being a Europa League side in the new year. Chelsea are the only team that have secured their place in the knockout stage, though they still have work to do to ensure first place and seeding in the draw on 11th December.

Having yielded just one point from their two games against the Italians, the Blues would drop into second place should they finish level on 11 points; that would open them up to possible games against Paris Saint-Germain or Barcelona.

Roma are playing their final match at home against bottom side Qarabag and, with the Azerbaijan side yet to get a win, Eusebio Di Francesco will be confident of getting the three points that would guarantee qualification. Indeed, if Atletico cannot win at Stamford Bridge then the Italians will advance regardless.

Atletico look to have left it too late to reach the last-16, despite their recent pedigree in the tournament. They have scored just four times in five matches, but do have a superior head-to-head record against Roma, so would overtake them with a win over Chelsea if their opponents are held to a surprise draw.

Atletico lost their home tie against Chelsea, but have shown domestically that this does not happen regularly – they are currently third, two points ahead of Real Madrid, and six points off the leaders Barcelona.
